Migrant Caravan Grows As It Approaches U.S. Border

A migrant caravan, which has grown into the thousands, walks into the interior of Mexico after crossing the Guatemalan border

A migrant caravan slowly marching from South America towards the United States continues to grow despite Mexico's attempts to stop the group at the country's southern border with Guatemala. The crowd has swelled from 4,000 people to an estimated 7,000 people after they forced their way past border gates and into Mexico.

As the caravan departed from the southern Mexico city of Tapachula, President Donald Trump called the situation a "National Emergency" in a series of tweets. Trump said that he has alerted the military and border patrol to be on alert and ready to deal with the caravan if it reaches the United States. The president blasted the "Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic Immigration Laws" and called on people to vote them out in the upcoming midterm elections. In his final tweet, Trump said the United States "will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid routinely given" to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
